Breath of Fire 2 Maeson
-----------------------

Public Version 1.05a:

Thanks to Praetarius5018, now the infamous Checksum from the Retranslation
can be skipped, and thus making your use of this hack, and the making of
all these patches, SIGNIFICANTLY easier and headache free!

Credits for finding the offset where to bypass the Checksum all for
	  Praetarius5018, thank you.

Because of that, patches were remade, and the process has been simplified a
lot! You can also mix any combination of extra patches (and small improvement
patchs by other people) without worrying ever again about the Checksum.

Fixed an issue with one of Rand's Transformations through Shaman Fussion.
I accidentally made it have a loss of Agility and a gain in Stamina, when
it had to be the opposite.

Removed some unnecessary code from the patch that restores the Encounter Rate
	  to its original form.

Public Version 1.05:

I've got feedback about the increased Experience in the Lower Encounter
Rate versions, and how it might be a bit too high, so I dialed it back
	  to how it was before.

I have tweaked the Drop Rates of a few enemies, raising them from 1/128
to 1/64. These changes are made to mid-game enemies, nothing big.

I have have made the background of the ingame menu darker for the versions
with the Retranslation. But I can't do much because the blue tones you see
aren't laid in a palette, it's more like a filter on top of the background,
and I have not found where it is stored.

I made the previous background color an optional patch.

I have remade the Checksum Fix patch to cover not only PHA_PHX_PHY_PHP's
"Unfussing Less" but also leszy's "Agi Up Fix" and "Keep the Great Bird"
too. This way you apply all three, and then the Checksum Fix and you can
forget about messing around with stuff.

For other combination of patches, just fix the Checksum yourself, it
	  gets truly maddening.

Public Version 1.04

Changelog:

I am pretty glad people seemed to react positively to the music
changes and have real confirmation that the overused theme got
	  under many skins out there.

Based on feedback, I swapped the music in two different areas,
the Uparupa Cave and the Simafort/Naegur underground for other
themes that I hope fit better.

	  Nothing else has been changed.

Public Version 1.03

Changelog:

I combined the Lower Encounter Rate patch from Ok Impala!
with my Hack, with some extra touches on Experience and
Zenny to make up for the reduced number of battles.

You can still choose to play with the Normal Encounter Rate,
but why would you punish yourself like that...?

In order to reduce the absurd overuse of the track
"There's is Something Here", an infamously short and
repetitive piece of music that is used in way too many
areas, it has been swapped out with other themes that
are played much less often, giving a lot more variety
to the adventure, or at the very least, taking away
the agonizing tedium it can produce.

This is something I've wanted to do for a looong time...

Drop Rates from some items were increased. Nothing crazy,
but to make certain 1/128 chance items to be 1/64. Mostly
to go along the lowered Encounter Rate, although every
version of this Hack takes advantage of this change.

The Music changes, the Lower Encounter rates and the possibility to make
the Checksum not annoying where three things that I REALLY wanted to have,
and at long last I got my wish granted!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm here again...
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, here I come again with another "thing", I guess.

Unlike other of my projects, this does not aim at to create a very different experience,
but to polish and attempt to make a smoother, more fun experience by cutting down significantly
on the grinding, improving the character that were less useful, making equipment more coherent,
giving a new flair to the Shaman system and things like that.

In any case, Breath of Fire II was always a curious game to me. It had many things that I saw
interesting or plainly great. I liked the story, I love how varied the cast of characters is
and how they have different abilities outside of battle, it's visually pretty decent, certainly
more visually striking during battles than a good chunk of the console RPGs of that time, and
it has some optional things to do which is always nice on old RPGs to me and has pretty good
music tracks here and there. It holds a pretty good core inside.

...Thing is, it also has a number of serious issues in my eyes that end up making it stumble
when compared to other SNES RPGs.

One of the biggest, was the translation. Sure, we could argue for days about "faithful this"
or "censored that" but the translation of Breath of Fire II is a very different topic. It is
simply one of the poorest translation jobs I've ever witnessed, without falling completely
into the "Let the machine do the translation" business that MANY games, specially visual
novels fall on in modern times as back then you couldn't just drop a script on a program
like you can do today.

Very poorly structured dialogue, full of gramatical errors, answers to questions that made
no sense... It basically destroyed most of the narrative weight of the game.

Thankfully there's a good alternative, the Retranslation made by D4S and Ryusui. It does a much,
much better job at being... Well, intelligible text, for starters. Different folks, different
strokes an all that, but the new translation gives so much more personality to the playable
roster, it does such a better job at telling a story, and it also looks pretty nice.

But beyond the text, Breath of Fire II suffers from some other things. There's a very large
disparity in usefulness between characters, with some feeling rather underwhelming. And the
Encounter Rate is abnormally high, which sure, quite a few other RPGs of the time had high
rates (Hourai High and Arabian Nights for example) but Breath of Fire II is one of the biggest
examples of this annoying trait.

And that brings me to the other main complain people got about this game was it is quite grindy.
Characters need a lot of Experience, yet monsters give very little (And little Zenny too). This
one of the very few changes that the GBA port got, although in my humble opinion doubling the
amounts is going too far, making the game way too easy. At least I've found myself always quite
over the usual Level you're supposed to be, even when I avoid grinding.

Funny enough, this hack started as a way to take the doubled experience and money to the Super
Nintendo version, but it was rejected as it was seen as a "cheat hack" which are supposedly not
permitted... Even if there are infact a variety of cheat hacks (Start with max everything, for
example) already there before I tried to upload mine, and also after it got rejected.

But, having it rejected was what caused me to roll my eyes and say "Screw it, let's work more
on it" and well, here we are, many years later. I've got quite a few people approach me to thank
me for this hack, so I guess it is still being played and that means quite a lot to me.

With version 1.03 is included a version with the Lower Encounter Rate (-50%) made by Ok Impala!
with some extra tweaks to Exp. Points and Zenny, to make up for the less numerous battles.

Another thing added for this last release tries to fix one of my biggest gripes:
The surprisingly extensive overuse of the music track "There's Something Here", also known as "that damn
dungeon theme", a very short, repetitive loop that is played so often that it becomes a very annoying joke.

This patch changes the music of most of the areas in which it plays, putting something else in place,
not only taking away the very tedius piece, but also giving a bit more exposure to tracks that were played
too little, as they get seriously ignored for some reason by putting the repetitive track everywhere.

It also incorporates a simplified background for the ingame menu for the Retranslation.
The original background, while very pretty, makes much harder to read things.
You can revert it if you want, though.

Patch Versions Explanation
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Because of the optional patches of this Hack, to cover all the ground I can, I think
I should explain them quickly.

Main Patch VS Simple optional Patch:
-------------------------
This has only one difference: What spells Ryu is able to learn through leveling up.

Here's the thing: I don't want to change the Dragon Spells. They're powerful one-time attacks that
take all the AP from Ryu and they're only really powerful when his AP is full, but when they hit they
hit HARD. It's an okay gimmick, and a classic feature of this title but, to me, this causes two things:

1: Makes Ryu a boring "mash A button for Attack" type of character, which it's something I never liked
in any RPG. Using Spells is, in most situations out of the question because AP should be reserved to
the Dragon Attacks, and even then, he learns very little besides what you can teach him via NPCs.

2: Makes bosses too easy for the most part. When you can knock off half or a third of a boss' HP in one move,
strategies kinda become unimportant. And can be abused very easily if you happen to abuse the cooking system too.
Some guides' advice for bosses is just to spam AP recovering Items and Dragon Attacks... I mean, it's a legitimate
way to play of course, but I just don't find it fun at all. Not only because it feels very unengaging, but also
because makes every other character basically meaningless, beyond the possibility to heal.

Because I make these hacks for me in the first place, I wanted to make Ryu a far more versatile character,
by giving him an actual spell list with a bit of everything. He's the son of a powerful magician after all,
we see it 5 minutes into the game, even. This way I could play ignoring the Dragon Powers (Which makes the
game a bit more challenging, and entertaining in it's own way) and being able to do stuff besides attack,
round after round, fight after fight, for dozens of hours... Sounds thrilling, don't you think?

But whatever. I give the option to use a more simpler Spell List for Ryu with the Simple version of the Hack.
If that's what you prefer, go right ahead and use that.

Normal VS Lower Encounter Rate:
-------------------------------
This is pretty obvious, of course. BoF II's Encounter Rate is maddeningly high, everyone knows this. Ok Impala!
approached me some time ago and we talked about this particular game's encounter rate. I told him what I knew,
not much really, and Ok Impala! was able to find a way to lower it, which is a dream come true for many.

I asked if I could incorporate it to my Hack, which Ok Impala said was cool.

Anyway, the Main patch of my hack includes a Lower Encounter Rate version of my Hack knock down the rate by 50%.
You can restore it to the original with the extra patch, or go even lower if you feel like it by looking for
OK Impala!'s own hack, as there's a patch for 75% reduction, although I find it a bit too much myself.

Sooo... That's it.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2 - Instructions
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, just like most patches, they're easy to install.
First you need a clean Breath of Fire II backup,
that matches this version:

Breath of Fire II (USA).sfc

CRC-32: 67CDACC5
MD-5 : E1FF1ED4AD5DBDBE86774920DFB5E9D4
SHA-1 : 1F7707E606B7E9FA8FB3908BBDDFCB5DEA93D776

This is for an unheadered ROM.
This is the same hash data that the Retranslation ROM uses,
of course chosen not only for being a known good dump, but
also for compatibility with the Retranslation patch.

---------------------------------
Steps for Ryusui's Retranslation:
---------------------------------

I am very happy to say that from 1.05a forward, patching with the Retranslation
is going to be much easier!

Thanks to Preatarious5018, now we have a way to bypass the Checksum entirely!

Before, we had to deal with it for every change made to the ROM, but now it
won't matter. It's a pretty simple process:

1: Grab your clean, BoF II ROM, and apply the Retranslation.

2: If you decide to use the Original Title Screen for the Retranslation,
or the "Through Fire and Flames" one, apply either one after the main
Retranslation patch. You can choose to leave the one the Retranslation
comes with, the song created for the japanese commercial, it's neat.

3: Apply my Main Patch.

4: Apply the "No Checksum" patch that goes with the version of the Retranslation
you chose. If you chose to keep the usual vocal track, or "Through Fire and
Flames", you apply that, and if you're using the original Title Screen one,
well... You apply that instead. Simple, I hope.

And that's it! From that point, you can apply any extra patches you want without
worrying about the Checksum at all.

After doing that, you can choose among several optional patches to restore the
original Encounter Rate (the main patch lowers them), a simpler Ryu that learns
far less Spells, revert the music changes, or change the ingame menu background.

You can also apply three other good patches that work with both the Retranslation
and my hack, and I recommend them too.

These are Ieszy's "Keep the Great Bird" and "Agi Up Fix":

Here's the link for Keep the Great Bird:
			https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/7692/

Here's the link for Agi Up Fix:
			https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/7691/

And also PHA_PHX_PHY_PHP's "Unfussing Less" patch:

Here's the link for Unfussing Less:
			https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/3627/

All three are great to have, even if I don't tend to transform my characters all that
much! Losing the Great Bird also makes you unable to grab a very important weapon, not
to mention much more convenient travelling (Hometown is cool, but for quick travels it
is kinda a slow process). And at the very least you should consider the Agi Up Fix.

With that said, depending on what are you going to play this on, you may still want
to fix the header after all the patching; it never hurts, specially if you're trying
to play it on original hardware.

Fortunately, it is very simple to fix it thanks to these two tools, you can choose any:

You can fix it with this tool, Lightweight Checksum Calculator by Cthulhu88:
https://www.romhacking.net/utilities/1479/

It's as simple as drag and drop your fully modded ROM into it.

You can, alternatively, use Advanced SNES ROM Utility by Dom aka Doke:

https://www.romhacking.net/utilities/1638/

This one has a GUI, so it's pretty selfexplanatory. Don't forget to save after
fixing the Checksum!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3 - Overall Description
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

...Well, similar to other hacks I made, there are a bunch of changes here and there.
While this is smaller compared to my other things, there still quite a few things to say:

Characters have suffered changes, some big, others are minor adjustements, in order to attempt to
give a better balance to the roster so there are no "bad/useless" characters. Stats, spells and equipment
have been modified for this. The idea, just like in the original game, is to reach the bulk of their total
stats at level 50. That said, you don't need to go to such level to beat the game.

Equipment had their stats and price changed here and there to compliment the changes made to the characters,
and to make each new weapon you come across a decent upgrade. Some pieces of defensive equipment had their
Def/Weight changed, and the characters able to use them too, this last change will make Rand be able to use
a bit more stuff. Prices have been decreased or increased depending on what each piece of equipment offers
in comparison to others (That is to say, a weaker sword should not be more expensive than a more powerful
one, unless it had a very special secondary effect, for example).

Some consumable items also had their prices changed. Status-healing items are cheaper, for example, and
fishes and Meat items got their prices increased to turn them into a good way to make some money throughout
the game without the need of grinding or abusing the Cooking system.

Spells have received some changes too. AP consumption for most of them is different, and for offensive Spells,
damage has also been modified. Now they're a bit more powerful and consistent as far as AP>Damage ratio is
concerned, and you can use Magic more often thanks to the less restricting AP costs. You can find a table
with the changes in it's own part of the readme.

There were changes made to Experience and Zenny too to make the game flow better, with less grinding,
both by increasing the Experience Points and Zenny you get, and by changing the Experiencie Tables of
the characters to cut down the needed amounts for each one with different tables depending on when they
are available and when they're not.

The Shaman System also got changes. While the combinations stay the same, the bonuses they give may have
suffered modifications here and there, and the tranformations instead of being plain stat-upgrades attempt
to give the character a different role, or make a certain character a more extreme version of itself (For example,
Lin becoming more of a physical crystal cannon). Oh, and Seny actually does something on her own now!

Because of all these changes, monsters had their stats adjusted. The difficulty level shouldn't be too different,
because even if some enemies are stronger, your characters are all around a better group too. Also note that this
Hack can be played without even using Shamans once, like in the original game, so they're not necessary at all.

I personally tend to make very moderate use of them.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4 - Character Changes
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One thing that I always wanted to do to this game is make the least useful characters better, although I
ended making changes to every character in the end, some bigger, some smaller.

In this section you'll have A LOT of information about each character, and I tried to put it all together
in a small space, so is easy to see all their info quick enough.

Besides the changes you'll see here, there are three others I would like to comment:

1; The way the characters gain stats through level ups has changed. In the original game, they gained
stats in a very strange way, sometimes getting very little gains, sometimes getting big jumps.
That made leveling up less rewarding unless you grinded several levels.

Now, characters grow in a much more steady way, making each level up matter a bit more by itself,
until level 50. After that, characters gain very little stats, just like in the original game.

2; The Experience tables have been modified. In the original game, some characters grew in levels
MUCH faster than others, and if you had a not so useful character leveling slowly, it could become
rather tedious. Not only that, but because Ryu is always on the team, he always ended many levels
   ahead of everyone else.

In this hack, between levels 20 and 50, the experience needed to level up has been modified in 3 groups:

1 - Ryu. He levels up slower than in the original game, but that's not much of a problem because he's
always getting exp. He will end getting a few levels ahead because of it, but it won't be to the
	   extent of the original game.

2 - Lin/Bosch. These two level up a bit faster than the other characters. This is because there are points
where you lose control of them, and having to train them up for the time they were away is not that fun.
Also, Bosch needs less experience from levels 8-16 so he catches up sooner once you get him back (If you
wish, use the Trout scene to get some Exp!).

3 - Everyone else. All the other characters take less than before to level up, which means less time grinding,
and an easier time to manage all characters so they're in similar levels, making the game have a better flow.

3: The Shaman system got some changes, and all the bonuses are wrote down in each character section.
The change I want to comment on is that Transformations are no longer a plain stat boost. Now they have good
and bad points, becoming less of a simple upgrade and more of a change to their role, or becoming a more extreme
version of a character. This way the original forms keep their importance and usefulness.

For example Tapeta becoming a stronger and faster character with a strong ability, at the cost of being a lot more
fragile and much worse at casting and supporting, or Rand becoming even slower but also more physically powerful.

Oh, and by the way, sorry if the names for transformations aren't the correct ones.
I don't know if they have official names...

Note: When you transform into a character that has less AP; you'll see that your Actual AP is still
the same as it was before transforming: Do not fool yourself, you don't have all that AP!

Let's say that you have 140/80 AP after transforming. This means that once you use a spell, you'll
lose ALL the extra AP and you'll go down to 80, no matter what spell you cast.
Think about it as a free, single cast.

Lastly, before getting into each character's information, here's a small summary on what each Stat does:

HP: : Of course you know what it does.
AP: : Think of any other RPG's MP, and you got it right.
Strength: Adds to your Attack, and of course increases the damage of your physical hits.
Stamina : Adds to your Defense, so the higher it is, the less phyisical damage you get.
Agility : Affects how fast a character can act, but depends on other factors, read below.
Wisdom : Reduces damage received by magical attacks and raises the chance of doing critical hits with Spells.
Luck : It apparently has to do with many different things, and in fact it even counts on the basic
damage calculation when doing normal attacks, so yeah, seems pretty widely used.

Guts : It's a rather unique Statistic. It can influence a random chance for a character to not
get knocked out if an attack from the enemies would do so, which can be a lifesaver but
even better, if the character did not do its action, it won't cancel it out!
It also affect's Ryu's Gut command.

Vigor : In Breath of Fire 2, Agility by itself is only half of the story. How much the armor you're
wearing affects how fast you can move. Vigor is the result of your Agility having the weight
of your gear substracted. So, sometimes wearing lighter gear gives you the chance to act
before your enemies, so it can be a good trade-off.

Condition:It affects several things, just like Luck. Things like Counterattacks, dodging and such
are affected by Condition. So it's rather important to keep an eye on this. There's an
Item that raises it, and some Status Effects lower it, too.

With all that said, let's get on with the characters!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
      Ryu:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Starts at Level 1. Ryu is the main character of the game. He's a blue

|Lv14 Lightning |
|Lv17 Rejuvenate | It's sad that for a long chunk of the game you can't use him, but thankfully he levels up

|Lv25 Vitalize |
|Lv28 Typhoon | The crossbows Bosch can get have some neat special perks, like atacking twice, or even

|Lv37 Restore | not just weak ones, even if of course, doesn't work all the time...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Starts at Level 13. Rand is a character you meet in Colossea/Coursair, and part of the named
________ "Shell Clan", which are humanoid armadillos.
|Spells:\
+---------------+ Rand is, in several ways, like a Monk of a Final Fantasy game. I mean:
|Lv1 Heal |
|Lv4 Purify | Very high HP, very high physical power, fights with his bare hands,
|Lv14 Lightning | has a limited amount of equipment available, and it consists on light
|Lv16 Rejuvenate| armor for the most part. But Rand here has some things to offer above that.
|Lv20 Raise Dead|
|Lv23 Quake | Rand possesses a decent spell list, consisting mostly on healing and support
|Lv27 Vitalize | spells which go pretty well alongside his physical capabilities. He also learns
|Lv32 Remedy | Some decent offensive spells, although they are few and far between.
|Lv35 Restore | That said, he has some weak points, he's the slowest character, and his
|Lv41 Might | limited equipment selection makes him more susceptible to elemental attacks.
+-----------------------+ He's also gone for a chunk of the early game, although for this hack, he starts
| Special Ability: Rouse| with a higher level so he doesn't end behind your other characters when he becomes

________
|Spells:\ Lin is a very, very phyiscally oriented character. She hits really hard, and

|Spells:\
+--------------+ In the original game, Nina sadly had several issues. For one, another character
|Lv1 Cyclone | completely overshadowed her, with better stats and getting spells sooner than her too.
|Lv1 Flame |
|Lv1 Frost | Those things have been for the most part rectified. Nina learns many spells, and
|Lv1 Jolt | the most powerful ones she gets much sooner than before. She also had her stats
|Lv7 Weaken | altered with improvements in most stats. She's now more resistant, faster, and can
|Lv12 Lightning| hit physically to some extent. Although because the changes in magic you probably

________ wrong franchise. Higlanders in BoFII are a tribe of humanoid monkeys from Highfort.
|Spells:\
+--------------+ In the original game Sten was seen as one of the least useful characters (to say it
|Lv1 Flame | softly). He was referenced as a "worse Lin", which is a sad thing to say about a
|Lv12 Fireblast| character, at least for me.
|Lv15 Silence |
|Lv16 Leech Pow| In my hack, Sten got some pretty decent upgrades. He's still comparable to Lin, but
|Lv18 Weaken | not so much as a "worse version" but a different way of doing a similar concept.
|Lv22 Typhoon | He's not as strong as Lin (yet he's far stronger than in the original game), and
|Lv24 Slice | slightly less fast, but has much better resistance, and far superior casting abilities.
|Lv28 Inferno |
|Lv32 Death | His AP is only okay, but his Luck is fantastic! His spell list also got bigger, with

Joins at level 15. Tapeta is an anthropomorphic frog, member of the so called "Creeping Clan", from the
________ kingdom of Naegurt. He's a carefree and relaxed guy, which gives the idea that he's
|Spells:\ not very smart, but seeing his comments when talking to him throughout the game in
+-------------+ your village, he probably knows a lot more than he lets on.
|Lv1 Speed |
|Lv16 Iceblast| In any case, Tapeta was another character seen as subpar. Not great stats, which made his
|Lv17 Raise D.| special ability kinda useless. Not a great Spell list either, and there were better
|Lv18 Blunt | front-line characters. So he was just there for his field ability and Warp, mostly.
|Lv19 Remedy | But that has changed a lot in this hack.
|Lv20 Rejuven.|
|Lv21 Shield | Tapeta has become some sort of a "Paladin". His strength is now good, his Stamina

5 - Item/Equipment Changes
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As far as consumable items, the only changes here are the prices, most of them are lower, as some of them
were a bit too expensive for what they did like Antidotes, or other status healing items.

Smoke bombs also cost less, so they can be used more freely at the beginning of the game.
If you're using the Lower Encounter version, they still work and reduce further the rate.

Fishes are more expensive, but that means you can sell the ones you catch for a bigger profit. The same goes
for the different types of meat, both mechanics make getting money faster, helpful specially early on.

* The animals you find depend on Ryu's level, the higher,
the more variety you'll find and more often they'll appear.
The items you get depend on how long you take to get it
once they are dropped. The longer you take the worse they
will become, if they don't disappear entirely.

Spells
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Spells in Breath of Fire II are similar to most Dragon Quest games, each Spell does a certain amount of damage,
with little variation (although here it can be reduced with Wisdom, but not to the extent of other RPGs).
Healing is similar in effect, too.

With lower AP costs (For the most part), characters with higher AP, and stronger offensive spells, Magic
will probably be used quite a bit more than in the original game, and that's a good thing.

Have in mind, though, that Spells used by enemies will also have the same power, this will make a few enemies
more dangerous. That and the fact that, the higher the power of a spell, the more damage is reduced with higher
Wisdom. Tiny spells like Flame that only do ~40 points of damage suffer a lot less from high magic resistance than, l
et's say, Missile. So those items with extra Wisdom are more useful latter into the game than early.

* Vigor still needs a high level of friendship between the

**Resurrect doesn't have the friendship clause that it has
in the original game, where you needed to have a certain
level of friendship between Ryu and the character using
Resurrect in order to cast it.

* Blizzard has a special effect, if you push the A button as it's
finishing its animation, it will continue (Showing ice puppies
running around) increasing the final damage of the spell.

** I wanted to make Sirocco have a lower AP Cost, but because you can
get it quite soon for how much damage it does thanks to Barose, I
had to increase it to a point where it's harder to spam for low level characters.

! Sirocco and Valhalla don't require a high level of friendship in order to be
casted like in the original game.

** What Shield really does is increase Wisdom, doubling it up to a maximum of 255.
This means that using Shield on a character not only reduces magical damage a bit,
but it will also increase the chances of critical magic attacks and inflicting status.

Whelp spells do up to 512 if you hit an elemental weakness.
Dragons do non-elemental damage. At first I thought it was
a mistake but thinking again, it might me totally intended
as they're too powerful already, and if they could hit
elemental weaknesses, they'd be pretty darn broken.

Formations and order are very important, as each formation alters each character's offensive and defensive
capabilities. Depending on the position, characters will receive a bonus to their damage, but also will
become more susceptible to physical damage and they'll be attacked more often.

But the game never says how much each formation slot affects. Here's a small list:

  Formation | Slot 1-Slot 2-Slot 3-Slot 4
     Normal | 130% 100% 90% 75%
    Parallel| 120% 100% 90% 83%
    Scramble| 120% 120% 100% 95%
     Defense| 100% 83% 83% 75%

This percentages are both the damage the character does AND receives. So a character in slot 4
during Normal formation would do 25% less damage, and take 25% less damage.

Being completely honest, I find myself using Scramble and Defense a lot more than the other two.
I am a big fan of using Magic, so when I feel like casting lots of Spells, Defense Formation is
pretty sweet, because the Attack downgrade is not going to affect me, while I can enjoy the lower
damage received (and if I'm using Ninja or Spar, that's extra helpful too).

And if I want to go hard on physical damage, Scramble is the one that provides the overall better
improvement, at the cost of higher damage received, yes, but if I deal more damage, battles are
  going to last less time.

There's not much difference between Normal and Parallel, and I find Parallel a bit better, if only
because receiving 30% more damage feels a bit extreme to me...

But Normal Formation can work with some kinda risky strategies, like having Tapeta on the front,
using his special ability to hit all enemies, and a companion raising his Attack power, or having
Sten dealing much stronger critical hits, or Ryu taking advantage of his common Counterattacks.

There's some neat experimentation you can do with the Formation system, make the most out of it!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Condition and Guts are also two stats that are not very clear.

Condition reflects how a character feels, and it changes the damage a character takes and deals, the higher
the better, and a poor Condition will make your character weaker. Being cursed lowers the Condition to "Ill".

You can improve a character's Condition by using a "Condition Up" item on them, which can be bought from one
of the Maniros, or created with the Cook System, and by taking a drink at the bar of your village if you
  chose the arabian builder.

Guts give a possibility to get back up once a character loses all his/her HP, reviving themselves with a few
hit points. The more flames, the higher the chances. It also makes Ryu heal himself more with his ability Guts.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You can actually get Saynie a bit early than most people thought.

Inside the church of Bando (that small peninsula south of Farmland) there were two pressure plates that would
move a door. During your first visit, if you keep your character on the pressure plate that moves the door to
the right, and wait for some time (if you emulate the game, use the Fast Forward function if you want), the
door will move several times more!

Each of these movements hides a room with different things, like some equipment, a few mini-boss battles,
some poor people jailed up, and also Saynie!

Thanks to Capcom for making this game.

Thanks to Justin3009 for helping me locate spell damage data, I couldn't have found it on my own. Thanks!

Thanks to zanto for developing an Enemy Editor. While at first I hex-edited monsters (as it didn't exist
when I started this hack), this tool was really useful for finding things like the enemy drops, and made
working on enemy-related changes easier.

Thanks to Ok Impala! for making a Lower Encounter patch. This game seriously needed it.

Thanks to Praetarius5018 for finding out about looking for the bypassing of the Checksum with the
Retranslation.

Thanks to D4S and Ryusui for the Retranslation projects. They truly bring new life to this game.

And thanks to all the people that have played this hack and those that took the time to tell me.
